On Huawei&#8217;s online sales platform, which is selling the device in two colors, nearly 3 million people had registered interest at publication time.<\/p>\n<p>The company&#8217;s event will be hours after Apple is expected to launch a slate of new products, including the iPhone 16, at its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/apple-new-iphone-ai-capabilities-expected-at-glowtime-event-2024-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fall Glowtime event<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Huawei said its phone will go on sale on September 20. The company will likely talk more specifics, including pricing, at Tuesday&#8217;s event, and it may also showcase its new line of electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Huawei didn&#8217;t immediately respond to a request for comment for this story.<\/p>\n<p>The timing of the launch and its preorder success signals Huawei&#8217;s ability to compete directly with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/apples-foldable-iphone-plan-doesnt-sound-that-convincing-2024-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple<\/a>. The US smartphone giant has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/apple-new-iphone-16-china-market-sales-glowtime-2024-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">losing ground<\/a> in China, the company&#8217;s most <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/apple-ceo-tim-cook-china-development-forum-xi-jinping-meeting-2024-3\" target=\"_blank\"><u>important international market,<\/u> <\/a>because of weakening consumer interest. China made up about 17% of Apple&#8217;s sales in the three months ending June 29.<\/p>\n<h2 data-toc-id=\"2eb7dbf2-c1bc-4acc-a198-3b80a2e2bd86\">Comeback story<\/h2>\n<p>Huawei was one of the world&#8217;s biggest smartphone players in the world before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/us-is-firing-back-again-in-china-chip-semiconductor-wars-2024-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US sanctions<\/a> in 2019 crushed its handset sales and prevented it from accessing the latest semiconductors.<\/p>\n<p>But the Shenzhen-based firm turned those sanctions into a comeback story last year.<\/p>\n<p>Huawei\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/apple-iphone-sales-china-new-headache-huawei-pura-70-2024-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shocked the world<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/huawei-smartphone-own-designs-processors-5g-2023-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">designing its own processors<\/a>\u00a0for a superfast smartphone and raised fears that China\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/apple-iphone-15-faces-battle-against-china-huawei-mate-60-2023-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>is rapidly producing solutions to bypass restrictions<\/u><\/a>\u00a0on its access to Western tech. In April, Huawei also launched a new smartphone series.<\/p>\n<p>While pricing for the latest phone, which folds twice, is not known, Huawei has <span>recently been competing with Apple in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/apple-iphone-price-cuts-averted-china-crisis-tim-cook-2024-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>same price territory<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Huawei&#8217;s Pura 70 \u2014 its April release \u2014 costs 5,499 yuan, or $774, while Apple&#8217;s iPhone 15 starts at 5,999 yuan.
