{"id":3533,"date":"2024-10-07T16:59:16","date_gmt":"2024-10-07T16:59:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hectorkott.com\/?p=3533"},"modified":"2024-10-07T16:59:16","modified_gmt":"2024-10-07T16:59:16","slug":"half-marathon-runner-dies-after-collapsing-at-the-finish-line","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hectorkott.com\/?p=3533","title":{"rendered":"Half marathon runner dies after collapsing at the finish line"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption\">\n<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/SEC_224797944-4782.jpg?quality=90&#038;strip=all&#038;w=1024\" width=\"2400\" alt=\"The Cardiff Half Marathon finish line (Picture: Huw Evans Picture Agency Ltd)\" class=\"wp-image-21750162\" height=\"1260\"><\/div><figcaption>The man collapsed just as he was about to cross the finish line (Picture: Huw Evans Picture Agency Ltd)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A Cardiff Half <a data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/marathon\/?ico=auto_link_news_P1_LNK1\">Marathon<\/a> runner who collapsed at the finish line has died in what organisers have described as a \u2018terrible tragedy\u2019. <\/p>\n<p>The runner, who has not been named, was rushed to hospital but later pronounced dead after completing the UK\u2019s second largest half marathon. <\/p>\n<p>The popular event is completed by almost 30,000 people each year, taking on the 13.1 mile course that starts and ends in the Cardiff city centre. <\/p>\n<p>The route goes past popular tourist spots such as Cardiff Castle, the Cardiff Bay barrage and Roath Park Lake, and is favoured by runners for its flat course. <\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Run 4 Wales said: \u2018This is a terrible tragedy and our deepest sympathies go out to the runner\u2019s family.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018In respect for the participant\u2019s family at this difficult time, no further details will be released.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Run 4 Wales previously said they have worked to raise awareness of unknown heart conditions, after two runners suffered cardiac arrest within minutes of crossing the finish line in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>In September, 29-year-old Sam Wealleans died after he collapsed during the Great North Run. <\/p>\n<p>Sam, from Northumberland, was running the half marathon for mental health charity Mind, in memory of his sister and a close friend. <\/p>\n<p>His parents Paul and Paula have said they are \u2018devastated and heartbroken\u2019 by the unexpected loss of their son, whose cause of death is not yet known. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018We have been overwhelmed by the thousands of kind messages and charitable donations from people across the country and would like to sincerely thank everyone for their support and sympathy.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Our family have taken great comfort in knowing he was loved by all who knew him,\u2019 they said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p>The Great Run Company have said its \u2018thoughts and sympathies are with all those who loved and knew him\u2019, with Mind\u2019s chief executive Sarah Hughes adding the charity would be \u2018forever grateful for Sam\u2019s contribution.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>60,000 runners signed up for the Great North Run this year, making it the biggest of its kind in Europe.<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><strong>Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"mailto:webnews@metro.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\">webnews@metro.co.uk<\/a>.<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>For more stories like this, <\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/news\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>check our news page<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\nFuente: https:\/\/ift.tt\/n1cA5ZH<br \/>\nPublicado: October 7, 2024 at 08:24AM<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The man collapsed just as he was about to cross the finish line (Picture: Huw Evans Picture Agency Ltd) A Cardiff Half Marathon runner who collapsed at the finish line has died in what organisers have described as a \u2018terrible tragedy\u2019.
