A wallaby was spotted wandering around a garden in southwest England<\/a> last week to the surprise of locals.<\/p>\n

Thousands of miles away from its native Tasmania, the marsupial was seen hopping around the garden in Blackdown Hills, near the border with Somerset.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not the first time the animals have been seen in England. In Exeter, Paul Peters and his daughter told\u00a0DevonLive<\/a> they saw a wallaby twice.<\/p>\n

He said: \u2018I was surprised when I first saw it in the field. You just don\u2019t expect to see something like that.\u2019<\/p>\n

According to filmmaker Tim Whittard, the UK has seen an increase in reports of wallabies in the last decade. It\u2019s thought a small group are breeding. <\/p>\n

It remains unclear how the wallabies \u2013 which are native to Tasmania \u2013 entered UK wildlife.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been speculated they either escaped from private owners or some may have \u2018deliberately\u2019 released the marsupials for unknown reasons.<\/p>\n

But the marsupials haven\u2019t had an easy time in the British Isles. A wallaby spotted in Cornwall earlier this year died after being hit by a car.<\/p>\n

Danny Johnson told the BBC <\/a>they had been driving on the A30 when he noticed the animal.<\/p>\n

He said: \u2018We\u2019re thinking what\u2019s going on, one of my mates gets out the car to check and then we see these legs just sort of jumping around.<\/p>\n

\u2018We\u2019re just confused; we didn\u2019t have a clue what was going on, next thing you know police cars pull up \u2013 I just started recording\u2026 then a kangaroo or a wallaby starts jumping towards us.\u2019<\/p>\n
