A teacher on TikTok has created a debate over whether it\u2019s appropriate to let elementary-age kids go to the restroom whenever they say they have to go. Jade Barrow<\/u><\/a>, an elementary school-age substitute<\/u><\/a> teacher in London<\/u><\/a>, says she uses \u201cdiscernment\u201d when deciding whether a child can go to the bathroom and has no problem making them wait.<\/p>\n

Barrow made the video to push back against parents who say their children should be able to go to the bathroom whenever they like. \u201cIf you want your child to receive special treatment, mainstream state school probably isn\u2019t the place to be sending them,\u201d Barrow captioned the video. \u201cSome parents really are setting their kids up for failure in real life with all this pampering and entitlement.<\/u><\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, I had about four examples of a time where I did not let the children go to the toilet,\u201d Barrow said in her video. \u201cSo I just want to give you a bit of insight into our world so you can make a better judgment when you say, \u2018Well, my child is allowed to go to the toilet whenever they want.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, we had an activity where, for three minutes, you listen to your partner read and then you swap over because you\u2019re going to give them feedback on how they read … I start the timer \u2014 one kid starts reading. The partner comes up to me and is like, \u2018Ms., can I go to the toilet?\u2019 But right now, you\u2019re supposed to be listening to your partner read for three minutes,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n

Barrow said it wasn\u2019t fair for the child to take a bathroom break while working on an assignment with another student.<\/p>\n

She added that it\u2019s inappropriate for a child to ask to go while she is giving instructions. \u201cNo, because if you now go to the toilet, when you come back, I\u2019m going to have to explain the activity again to you.\u201d She also believes they should wait once recess has ended and the kids have returned to class. \u201cYou literally just had playtime … you\u2019re going to have to hold onto it for a minute,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The teacher clarified that she\u2019d only make a child hold their bladder for a few minutes. \u201cAt max, it\u2019ll be like, four minutes,\u201d Barrow said. \u201cIf I can see that they\u2019re really … desperate, then fair enough, I\u2019ll let them go.\u201d<\/p>\n
