Pope Francis<\/a> issued his fourth encyclical \u2013 a letter to all of the bishops \u2013 denouncing a world that \u2018is losing its heart\u2019 during times of global turmoil marked by \u2018wars, socio-economic disparities and the uses of technology that threaten our humanity\u2019.<\/p>\n

The harrowing document, titled \u2018Dilexit Nos\u2019, Latin for \u2018He Loves Us\u2019, has appealed to the faithful to \u2018meditate\u2019 on Jesus\u2019 love in a world where consumerism and algorithms obscure humanity.<\/p>\n

While the Pope didn\u2019t cite specific examples of global turmoil in his encyclical, he frequently refers to conflicts from\u00a0Ukraine<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to Gaza<\/a> in homilies, weekly prayers and global travels.<\/p>\n

Pope Francis often asks for prayers for the \u2018martyred\u2019 people of\u00a0Ukraine\u00a0and most recently cited \u2018inhumane attacks\u2019 in Gaza.<\/p>\n

In the Middle East conflict, he has tended to take a balanced line, often mentioning Israel and the hostages still held by Hamas alongside the suffering of the Palestinians.<\/p>\n

In the document, the pontiff said the failure to \u2018feel that something is intolerable\u2019 in the suffering on both sides of conflict \u2018is a sign of a world that has grown heartless\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018When we witness the outbreak of new wars, with the complicity, tolerance or indifference of other countries, or petty power struggles over partisan interests, we may be tempted to conclude that our world is losing its heart,\u2019 he wrote.<\/p>\n

The pope warned that consumer-driven societies \u2018dominated by the hectic pace and bombarded by technology\u2019 risked interfering with the possibility of engaging with an \u2018interior life\u2019. <\/p>\n

He noted that algorithms have revealed that our thoughts and will are much more \u2018uniform\u2019 than we had previously thought. \u2018They are easily predictable and thus capable of being manipulated,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

In an era of artificial intelligence, \u2018we cannot forget that poetry and love are necessary to save our humanity\u2019, he wrote.<\/p>\n

Vatican encyclicals are the most authoritative form of papal teaching and traditionally take their titles from the first two words of the document.<\/p>\n

Monsignor Bruno Forte, a theologian who is archbishop of the Italian diocese of Chiet-Vasto, said the latest encyclical \u2018can be truly considered as a summary of everything that Pope Francis has said and wishes to say to our brothers in humanity. <\/p>\n

He says, \u2018God loves you and has shown you in the best way, through Jesus.\u2019<\/p>\n

Monsignor Forte said the document should not be viewed as \u2018just a spiritual refuge\u2019 but as a proposal of \u2018love, mutual reception and forgiveness.\u2019<\/p>\n
