This is the moment a brand-new Disney cruise ship rescued four passengers stranded on a sinking catamaran off the coast of Bermuda.
Footage shared by the US Coast Guard shows the Disney Treasure coming to the aid of the disabled 50ft catamaran, the Serenity, in the Atlantic on Sunday.
The small boat was 265 miles from the British island territory when it launched a distress call at 8.30 am.
Its escape hatch had blown a gasket, causing the Serenity to fill with gallons of water within minutes.
The closest vessel was the Disney Treasure, which was travelling from Netherlands to Port Canaveral, in Florida, to prepare for its maiden voyage.
It was 80 miles away when it answered to the Coast Guard’s urgent call for help.
The swimmers were on the brink of drowning when a lifeboat from the cruise ship arrived to rescue them.
A crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City in North Carolina launched a HC-130 to fly over the scene until the rescue was complete.
Disney Treasure Captain Marco Nogara said that they were pleased to be able to help the passengers in peril.
‘Our crew members worked together on the rescue, skillfully demonstrating their training and commitment to safety,’ he said.
None of the passengers rescued are understood to have any medical issues after the incident.
